Hardening Your Home

Hardening Your Home

Did you know that flying embers can ignite homes up to a mile from a wildfire. Get your home ready now by hardening your home before a fire starts by using ember-resistant building materials.
Here are some things that can be done to harden your home and make it more fire resistant.

Exterior Walls

Walls covered in wood products such as T1-11 panels or shingles, are common materials used for construction. Though they are great for cost savings and are considered great insulators; they are very combustible materials and are not good choices for fire-prone areas.

It is always better to build or remodel your walls with fire resistant building materials such as fiber cement or stucco. A proper installation that protects the entire exterior structure is when the materials extend from the foundation to the roof eves.

We are experienced with the installation of James Hardie Lap Siding, which is a fiber-cement product and qualifies as an ember resistant building material. Learn more about James Hardie Siding Products.

Cementing Exterior Walls

Extreme heat caused from a wildfire can cause windows to shatter. Broken windows then allow burning embers to enter and start fires inside the structure. Homes that are the most vulnerable to this happening are homes that have single-pane windows. A great defense is to install Dual-pane windows with at least one of the panes being tempered glass. Tempered glass is a great way to slow down thermal heat and reduces the chance of the windows shattering. Other possible considerations is reducing the size or number of windows in the home. Windows that are facing large grass areas or dry vegetation are a good place to consider these modifications.

We have been remodeling homes with new windows for over 20 years. We can install nearly any window of your choice.
